Norvind cuts curtailment 31%

A 640 MW onshore fleet across northern Norway was losing output to curtailment nobody could attribute. Nacelle-level measurement made every lost megawatt-hour traceable to a turbine and an hour.

The challenge

Norvind’s four Finnmark sites reported a stubborn gap between modelled and delivered output. The grid operator, the turbine OEM and Norvind’s own operations team each had a different explanation, and none of them could be tested against the SCADA averages the sites were producing.

With a refinancing due, lenders wanted a defensible answer for every megawatt-hour that had not reached the grid.

What we did

Zephyra fitted every turbine with a nacelle unit reading power, rotor speed, pitch and yaw at 10-minute resolution, paired with met-mast and satellite atmospheric data. Each reading was signed at source and committed to the ledger, so the fleet’s history became a single record rather than four site exports.

Curtailment, availability and wake losses were attributed automatically, turbine by turbine, and surfaced to Norvind, the OEM and the grid operator from the same view.

The outcome

Once losses had a cause and an owner, most of them turned out to be negotiable. Grid-instructed curtailment fell 31% over two seasons as Norvind renegotiated its connection agreement on measured evidence, and the OEM resolved a pitch-control fault that had been hiding inside the averages. The refinancing closed on the ledger record without a single side letter.

Ingrid Halvorsen

“What we valued most about Zephyra was that the measurement stack wasn’t just a dashboard — it was a scientifically grounded system built for our asset class. We could always trace exactly how a megawatt-hour was accounted for, and their team walked us through every question.”
